So…just conducted the Ardenne High Alumni Choir for the funeral of a past principal of the school, Dr E.M.Claire Gayle…and I must say, that the “inherited” directorship of a choir can be a mammoth task, especially when you stand in the shadow of Mr Noel Dexter…like THE.NOEL.DEXTER… consequently, the singers don’t always heed me, and why would some of them? To most, if not all, I could be at LEAST a son, at the most a grandson… but we pushed through and did a well enough rendition of Sickles’ “Eternal life” (A setting of the Prayer of St Francis of Assisi)… if not for the fact that the sopranos were a bit too…present… it was a good muddle through…an issue though is that Mr Dexter taught this song, interpreted it and they were adamant to try and adapt to my interpretation and nuances…at points I had to literally stop myself from putting my hand at my knee to get a simple decresendo which was needed, because they were singing a soft passage at forte -__- …but I am pleased that some directives were followed, and if nothing else, it was established I was conductor and rehearsal master when I was put before them. so having done a concert and two performances with them under my baton, is it safe to say I am the actual concertmaster? not at all, the process will begin itself again very time I am placed before them…sigh…Oh for love of Music and scholastic patriotism
